Winter Mantel {and Fur Tree Tutorial}

January 16, 2013 10 Comments Holly & Nat

I know I should be decorating with hearts and all that stuff, but I love my winter mantel so much that I can’t pack it away just yet! Today I am sharing how I updated my Rustic Christmas Mantel for winter, and showing you guys how to make the faux fur trees I used in both designs.

To update my mantel after Christmas, I removed the evergreen cedar garland and replaced it with this beautiful {plastic} white one…. also cedar. I added another white reindeer and some mercury glass votives I picked up at Target. The large candles were an after Christmas score {$5}, and they smell heavenly when I light them!
Here’s a full shot:
Now, on to the faux fur tree tutorial!
If any of you have made these cone trees before, there are few different options available in craft stores. Paper mache and styrofoam cones are the only ones I had ever used before. They can get a bit pricey for the larger sizes, but last week I discovered this little secret in the doll crafting aisle…
Plastic Doll Cone {12″} for $1.99
This is a perfect size, and the price can’t be beat 🙂 I also picked up a sheet of craft fur in the same aisle for $2. For under $5, I created a beautiful piece of holiday decor for my mantel!
Here’s how I did it:
Start by covering your cone with the sheet of fur to see where you need to trim it. Cut off the excess fur, and then glue it together in the back with your hot glue gun {on low heat setting}. Pretty simple right? I love it!
Here is a peek at another tree I created with a cozy {and trendy} fabric… plaid flannel! You can get all of the details for my flannel scalloped tree here.
 My winter mantel is truly bringing the outdoors in this month. We’ve had snow almost every day, and it will not be melting any time soon!

    Love the winter mantle! I haven’t started with hearts and flowers yet either because I just can’t let go of the wintery items around the house.
    The fur trees are beautiful!
