Washi Tape Silhouette Art {Tutorial}

April 6, 2012 39 Comments Holly & Nat

There are only a few days until Easter and I still have candy to buy, lots of eggs to fill {and hide}, dinner to plan…. but hey, why not throw in a last-minute Easter decoration? I promise it is super easy AND it involves my new favorite crafting supply.

Washi tape.

Recognize it? Yep. It’s the recently-made-famous washi tape from Target. You get 4 rolls for $4! That’s one heck of a deal people 🙂 The first time I went looking for it, I couldn’t find it! Desiree at the 36th Avenue provided some pictures (in this post) of the exact location to help us out… thank you!

I also picked up a set of lavendar decorative tape from Michael’s {Recollections brand.}

Now that I finally have my hands on this stuff I’ve been thinking of all sorts of fun ways to use it. I really love all the cute bunny “silhouette” projects I’ve seen pinned for Easter, like this one from the talented girls at Uncommon Designs. I decided to make my own version using washi tape.

I wanted to figure out a way to make the silhouette shape into a single adhesive sheet, so it could be applied to my canvas smoothly… almost like a sheet of washi tape vinyl. So, here’s what I came up with.

You’ll need:

  • Rabbit silhouette {for your pattern} Download PDF here
  • Contact paper
  • Canvas of your choice
  • Assorted washi tape
{1} Place your printed pattern underneath the back side of the contact paper. Trace an outline of your silhouette shape. {2} Turn the contact paper over and you will see a faint outline of your shape. {3} Start applying the washi tape in any pattern and direction you desire. {4} Make sure it covers the entire shape–you want the tape to overlap the outline of your image. {5} Cut out your silhouette shape, following the outline on the back of the contact paper. Peel the backing paper off. {6} Apply the silhouette to your canvas (or any other smooth surface.) What a cute little washi tape Easter Bunny!
The best part about this project is that it’s not just for Easter 🙂 You could use any shape or image, trace the outline and create all kinds of washi tape art! Think about how cool this would look with a monogram? I may just have to try that very soon 🙂
If you decide to try this out and create your own version of “washi tape art,” let us know! This is some pretty amazing stuff, there are so many possibilites! In fact, we love our washi tape so much we’ve decided to have an enitre WEEK of washi tape goodness here at My Sister’s Suitcase.
Starting Monday, we’ll be showing you a new way to use washi tape each day! And, while we’re at it, we’ll be linking up all of our ideas at Washi Tape Mania, hosted by these fabulous blogs: Live.Laugh.Rowe. Uncommon Designs, and Chasing Sunshine. Their fun washi party starts on Tuesday, April 10. We’ll be featuring a round up of our favorite washi tape ideas later in the week, so make sure to join in and link up!
So, have any of you raided your local Target to get your hands on some cheap washi tape? Where else have you found it? Here’s a good online shop with tons of cute tape {haha}: http://www.cutetape.com/
If you want to share the washi goodness goin’ on here next week, grab a button 🙂

    I’ve been wondering what this WASHI tape stuff was– thanks for explaining it! Funny, I went to two different Targets today and still want to head out again tonight to get this tape! It will have to wait until tomorrow…can’t wait to try it. Thanks! Found you through Tatertots and Jello.

    Your washi tape bunny is adorable! I’ve never seen or heard of washi tape, but now I want some so I can make awesome silhouettes like yours 🙂 Bummer we don’t have Target here – I’ll have to hit up some craft stores and see what I can find.

    Thanks for the crafty inspiration 🙂

    I have a bunny that was given to us when the previous owners didn’t want her anymore. I love her. So now I notice bunnies and rabbits like never before. I clicked on your link from “a pumpkin and a princess”. I am so glad she posted your link. This bunny of yours is so pretty. I don’t have washi tape available here. If I did your bunny would be the first thing I made with it. thank you for sharing, Debra Kapellakis your newest subscriber 😀
