Stenciled Desk Organizer

September 4, 2013 7 Comments Holly & Nat

My kids went back to school yesterday — whoo hoo! I love this time of year when office supplies seem to be on every store shelf (at dirt cheap prices!) It’s motivated me to finally get my own desk space a little more organized. I have a pretty cool wooden desk organizer that I have been wanting to give a makeover, so I decicded to try it out with the new multi-surface paints and stencils from DecoArt.
Here’s what my wooden 3-drawer organizer looked like before:

I’m digging the two-tone paint and wood combination right now, so instead of painting the entire thing, I left the drawer fronts and painted the rest in White Birch. The Americana Multi-Surface paints are really cool because they work on virtually any surface… wood, glass, metal, plastic, fabric and more. And the color selection is amazing!! Check out these gorgeous blues and neutrals:

I wanted a creamy white to contrast the dark wood, and I love how the White Birch color turned out!
I wanted to add a vintage touch to the piece, so I decided to use the Times New Roman number stencils on the drawers. I picked another multi-surface paint color, Dolphin, to mix with the white to add a little bit of gray to the numbers. I cut my stencils to fit the drawer fronts, then taped them in place and lightly applied the paint with a stiff bristled stencil brush.

It was super easy and they turned out just how I pictured (on the first try!) I added some name labels for each of my kids in my other color crush of the moment — mint green — and my makeover was complete:

Now that this project is done, I can’t wait to start working on the homework station that I have planned for my boys. What back-to-school organizing is going on in your homes?

If you want to try out your own paint project, Americana Multi-Surface Satins are available for purchase at Michaels, A.C. Moore, Hobby Lobby, and other fine craft retailers. There’s a great rebate going on right now, too! Here are all the details:
