Spring Planter from a Thrifty Old Chair

March 23, 2012 18 Comments Holly & Nat

It’s Round 3 of American Crafter, and that means “Spring” projects! I’m glad the weather finally cooperated this week so I could enjoy some time outside re-doing this $5 thrift store chair…

I wanted to make something bright and cheery that would make me smile when I look at it… I think I succeeded 🙂

Gerbera daisies are one of my favorite flowers, and when I found this plant with gorgeous orange blooms, I knew it was perfect for my new planter chair. Here’s a look at the evolution of my chair:

{1} $5 thrift store score {2} Primed with a coat of Kilz {3} Layer of turquoise paint (I was hoping to see some of this color through when I distressed it! It ended up giving it a more layered, worn look.) {4} Top coat color: Global Blue by Krylon {5} A new “moss-upholstered” seat {6} Final result: A whimsical Spring planter!

I was inspired by the new trend in MOSS I’ve been seeing everywhere, and I knew that I wanted to create a faux-upholstery look with moss. Here’s what I did:

{1} Used the old seat to create a pattern {2} Cut my new seat out of foam core posterboard (dollar store) {3} Traced the size of my plant’s pot {4} Cut a hole for the pot in the center {5} Added a few layers of batting with hot glue {6} Covered the finished seat with a this SuperMoss product. It’s basically a mat of moss–so many cool things your could do with this! (I got mine at JoAnn’s) and I used hot glue again to secure it.

Here’s another look at my finished planter…

It really brightens up the entire front of our house. {Now, I just need to paint the front door in a more cheery color!} I can’t wait to enjoy the nice weather this weekend and next week for Spring Break. I’ll be doing some painting and lots of trips to the park with the kids 🙂 What are your plans for the weekend?

This is major adorable-city!! It wants to come live on my new porch, if you don’t mind ;-). I love it!!! Seriously, you did an awesome job, Holly! I am in awe of your creativity! Plus, I’ve been loving moss lately, so this is right up my alley 🙂

This was exactly my first thought of what I was going to do!!! I have the chair and everything. I saw this idea a while back and thought that would be great for spring, so when I hear the theme, I totally thought that is what I would do! (And my chair looks so similar!) I would have never thought of the moss though, GREAT JOB!!

Love the chair. I’ve done that before with an old rocker and sat it outside my shop. It was so gorgeous by the middle of summer………..pansies flowing down the sides. Then one night, late, while I was at the shop, I heard a truck pulling away from out front. I went to the door to see my rocker leaving in the back of that truck. I guess that’s what I get for having such a pretty planter outside my shop.
