Spooky Smoothie Bar {A Healthy Halloween Snack!}

October 22, 2013 7 Comments Holly & Nat

2 weeks ago, I started an 8-week Health Challenge with a big group of people – many are several members of my extended family. We get points for eating better, exercising, even doing service. Um, yeah. It’s been SO hard to resist the Halloween treats! Candy Corn M&Ms…don’t even get me started. So I’ve been making a lot of green smoothies to get in my veggies and curb the sweet cravings. To make it more fun for the whole family, we spook-i-fied it last weekend and my kids drank more green than I thought they ever would!
DISCLAIMER: my husband and I had way too much fun coming up with silly and spooky names for the smoothie ingredients. Some of them are LAME! Squirrel brains? Maybe we were super sleep-deprived from our kids thinking they can hop in bed with us 14 different times every night. Anyway – the point is to make it fun for YOUR family. Let the kids come up with names if you want!

I used plain black cardstock and a white American Crafts marker to make the labels, then backed them in this fun SpookyTime Matstack from DCWV. I love that some of the papers have glitter and foil accents. The clips are easy – washi tape and clothespins! I hot glued the tags and was ready to get my smoothie on in no time!

I set up the all the smoothie ingredients on the kids’ little IKEA table and then surprised them with a special make-your-own smoothie treat. I actually just brought over the blender and let them fill it up with whatever they wanted. (Okay, I snuck in a little more spinach when they weren’t looking!)
Here are the ingredients we used:
  • frozen strawberries, blueberries and raspberries
  • bananas (in half with candy eyes, of course)
  • Orange Juice (with some food coloring to make it yucky looking)
  • vanilla yogurt
  • honey
  • baby spinach
  • you could also make it with water instead of OJ – or dilute it a little
  • ice (optional)

Add some black and white straws and a fun (okay, not so healthy) ghost Peeps topper and your kids will think you’re the coolest mom ever. Mine keep asking when we are going to make them again!

How great would this be for a pre-trick or treating snack?
Fill them up with something healthy before heading out the door!
Kid tested. Mother approved.
In case you missed it, Holly shared her Nursery inspiration and a $100 Home Depot Giveaway yesterday!
Oh, and she’s also having a baby tomorrow. No big deal. 😉 I’m so excited!
