Learn how easy it is to make your own pom poms and then create this adorable rainbow pom pom necklace and headband. This is a simple craft to do with kids, and the perfect addition to a St. Patrick’s Day outfit!
Before I had my little girl, I never worried too much about my kids dressing up for certain holidays. As long as my boys are wearing something green on St. Patrick’s Day, we’re covered. But now that I have two girls, I like finding simple ways to make an everyday outfit special for the holiday. My 4-year-old is really into jewelry recently… she loves wearing my necklaces whenever I give her a chance. My baby has even started putting on some of her dress up jewelry! So I wanted to make something for them that is kid-friendly, virtually indestructible, and festive for St. Patrick’s Day. I came up with this Rainbow Pom Pom Necklace:
Pom poms are all the rage it seems… I’ve seen them on everything from pillows to throws, so why not a necklace? The coolest part is that you can wear it two ways! As a necklace OR a headband!
Another thing I love about this project is how easy it was to make! Here’s what you’ll need (Amazon affilitate links included below):
- assorted colors of yarn (for those of you with a stash of yarn in your craft room, this will pretty much be a no-cost DIY!)
- pom pom maker (I used the smallest size I could find at JoAnn Fabrics)
- elastic metallic thread
- scissors
I started with this beautiful rainbow of yarn. I tried to pick colors that were on the brighter end of the spectrum, to match my daughter’s spunky personality!
Then I just followed the instructions for the pom pom maker… it is so simple! You’ll wrap your yarn around the arches (I did a double or triple layer of wrapping to get extra full pom poms), then cut the yarn down the middle, tie in the center, trim, and you have your cute little mini pom pom!
Once all the colors were complete, I started threading the pom poms on to the elastic thread:
I tied the necklace closed with a simple knot, and that’s it! Pretty cute, huh?
Since the thread I used is elastic, it also works as a headband… I mean, seriously, how fun is that??
My girl is stylin’ and ready for her St. Patrick’s Day party at preschool!
What do you like to do with your kids to make the holidays more special?
