Project Life 2014: Weeks 1 – 4

February 20, 2014 2 Comments Holly & Nat

In January I made the decision to go digital for my Project Life album this year, and I am LOVING it so far! You can read my pros/cons list HERE. Thank you for all the comments and feedback on that post – I think you addressed every one of my “cons” so well!  Today I want to show you weeks 1-4 and share what I’ve learned so far!

WEEK 1

I made a few tweaks (one of my favorite things about digital) and it was my first week…so not my favorite but I know I’ll get into a groove soon enough. I am using the hexagon month/week labels for the whole month (just copy and paste all the layers) but I’ll do something different for February!

WEEK 2

I had fun playing with the Sunshine Core Kit (designed by the amazing gals at A Beautiful Mess) and I’m still really keeping it as simple as I possibly can. My photos aren’t fabulous, and I’m not letting it bother me.

I’ve been rotating and adjusting the CZ templates as needed to fit the pictures for the week. I’ll have to do a quick post on how to do that – it’s fairly easy. I also changed the color of the “Today is” card to match the pink in the title card from page one. Also super easy.

WEEK 3

Instead of the weekly journaling card, I just made a little list of things we are loving right now. I love the flexibility of this project, that I can write as little or as much as I want! I needed something for one more 3 x4 spot so I added a screenshot I had saved from a text with my Sis and Miss Ivie!

WEEK 4

This is another tweak of template D in the CZ Life Basics Minimal set. I LOVE having the already-formatted journaling space. It really makes things go faster when putting together each pages.

I am totally “dumbing it down” for lack of a better phrase. I know I won’t keep up if I spend 2-3 hours on a gorgeous, perfectly edited layout each week. I added a few little journaling lines right on top of a few photos this week to explain the picture. Keep it simple!

Since the Just Add Color cards are all 2×2 and 4×4, I just clipped the card to the template and adjusted the size until it fit without showing white space. This obviously won’t work for every card, but there are many that can fit.

Tip of the Week:

Organize your photos in iPhoto using Smart Albums.

Basically that means that if you’re like me and are importing pictures from 2 different phones and a DSLR, they all get sorted by the date range you set up (so I do it by week that matches my PL weeks!) This was like a huge lightbulb moment for me. Cathy Zielske has a video that explains exactly how to do it. It’s definitely worth checking out!

Goals for February
(Yes, I know it’s almost over!)

• try using one kit for the whole month for a better flow
• set a time goal for each layout and complete on Sunday nights
• Finish creating all Smart Albums (iPhoto) for the rest of 2014

Alrighty! Well I hope to get a little quicker in my process so I can share all of February at the end of the month. Next Thursday I’ll share a little tip – what are your questions? Would you find video useful? Any Photoshop beginners out there?

HERE is my introductory post to Digital Project Life 2014:

Your layouts look fab. I do digi scrapbooking for the ‘nice photos’ with creative memories package and traditional PL. I think if I had photoshop or something I would do PL digitally too. Can’t use the templates with my present package. What software do you use?

Your PL is looking great! That children’s museum looks so fun!
