Paper Straw Halloween Countdown

October 1, 2014 8 Comments Holly & Nat

Happy first day of October! This time of year is hands down, my all time favorite. It’s a little dark and rainy today and smells heavenly – I’m in love! And now that it’s really October we can start celebrating all things Halloween! Today I want to share an easy DIY Countdown to Halloween I made with one of my favorite party supplies : paper straws!

The paper straw craze has been around for awhile, but I love that you can find them other places besides etsy and online shops now! I grabbed all these adorable Halloween patterns at Walmart. The smaller ones are actually little “pop sticks” for cake pops and the like, but they work just as well. Here’s what you’ll need to put together these fun Paper Straw Frames for your Halloween decor:

  • paper straws in variety of patterns and lengths
  • picture frames (search your house!)
  • hot glue
  • tags, number stickers (purchased or cut with electronic cutter)
  • clothespins

I started by cutting down all my straws to fit the frame. The standard size fit my 5×7 frame with just a little trimming down, and the pop sticks worked for my 3.5 x 3.5 frame.

Hot glue will hold those cute straws in place…

(or if they’re really tight you won’t need it and can reuse the frame!)

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut some simple tag shapes out of cardstock and one of my most favorite things to make the numbers: adhesive-backed cardstock! It’s like your own custom little stickers, people! I know, it may not seem that ground breaking but it just makes projects like this so much easier. You could also write, stamp, type or use store bought stickers for the numbers.

***TODAY ONLY Silhouette is wrapping up their 5th Birthday celebration and SALE! Click the links to find the Silhouette Adhesive Cardstock and Halloween Circle Tags I used for the countdown. Use the code BIRTHDAY at checkout to get 40% off most items in the store! (Ends TODAY 10/1/14)

Hot glue the clothespins to the straws and you’re all set. My kids love to count down to things, and since I kept the colors neutral I think we might be using this for other holidays and birthdays, too!

I used the same sticky-back cardstock to add this skull to the smaller frame. Isn’t he cute? I’m SO not into scary Halloween decorations 🙂
