Snack Ideas for Kids On-The-Go

It’s finally SUMMER! For our family, that means a lot of time spent in the car to visit family. We have several trips planned for work, family reunions, and cousin time. I love to pack snacks before the trip to avoid getting stuck at another drive-thru with less healthy options. Here are some ideas to help you save money and give your kids healthier snack options this summer!

I feel pretty lucky that my kids are generally good eaters. They like most vegetables and love to snack on fruit and nuts. I’ve tried to make trying new things fun for them – whether it’s making a cool pattern out of their snack or picking out something we’ve never tried at the store and letting everyone taste it at dinner.

I want those same habits to continue through the busy summer months, so I gathered a bunch of vegetables, fruit, nuts and snacks to make on-the-go snack packs. Single-serving containers of Hidden Valley Ranch are a perfect addition to carrots, cucumbers and mini bell peppers.

While shopping at our local Smith’s store, we found Glad sandwich and snack bags with some of my kids’ favorite characters on them. Little things like that make my kids so happy! (Go here to locate your nearest Kroger store.)instore-photoMy kids all like/can eat different things, so preparing bags ahead of time with different characters makes it easy to tell which snacks are for each child. My 18-month old loves grapes (cut in half) and I like to keep them in the fridge to help soothe her gums while she’s teething!

You can also put together a custom snack mix with your kids’ favorite things – this sweet mix included graham crackers, dried cranberries, cocoa-dusted almonds and a few M&Ms for fun. (Still better than an Icee, right?)

We are keeping bags ready to go in the fridge and in our snack bin in the pantry for road trips or “I’m hungry!” summer afternoons. Because there are SO many of those, am I right?

Summer is going to fly by and before you know it, it will be already time for back to school! Grab some fun bags so you’ll be set when August rolls around!
