How to slip-cover your table with a RUG!

February 27, 2013 10 Comments Holly & Nat

A week ago, I revealed my new Living Room to you guys… thank you for all the sweet comments! Today I am going to show you how I updated a thrifted table, and made it into a one-of-a-kind {kid friendly} piece of furniture.

I started out with this plain table I scored when the GAP stores closed in our mall last month. It was used as a merchandising table for clothes, but it’s the perfect size for a coffee table in my room. I liked the industrial look of the legs and solid wood top… it makes it super sturdy!

But after a few weeks of my kids climbing on it and racing their hot wheels all over, there were already a few scratches and dings in the wood. I knew I wanted to cover it with something unconventional, and figure out a way to make it easily removable for cleaning. I was shopping at Target one day and came across some gorgeous rugs by Nate Berkus… the textures and designs were amazing. I knew exactly what I wanted to do! {Unfortunately, none of those rugs were the right size for my table, so I continued my search.}
Keep reading to find out how I slip-covered my coffee table with a rug!

I found this blue and white woven rug at TJ Maxx… it was perfect! It is a 3×5 rug, and the dimensions of my tabletop are 24″ x 60″ so I knew it would be a tight fit, but I went for it. Just the right amount of color and texture. I was in love.
I picked up some 1″ elastic at the fabric store, and cut it into strips to attach the two sides of the rug together {this part will be underneath the table so no one will see the elastic when you’re done!}

I hand-sewed each piece of elastic, {spaced approx. 10 inches apart} down the length of the rug. I used five strips in total. This is what the rug looked like when I was done. Then I just lifted the coffee table on one end and slipped the legs through the elastic pieces. The rug literally “slipped” right on!

It stays in place pretty well, but I may add some of that non-slip material in a few spots underneath, just to make it totally secure. I wasn’t originally planning to leave the rug tassels showing, but I actually like them now! And if I ever want to change things up, I can easily remove the rug, snip off the elastic and use it how it was originally intended — on the FLOOR 🙂

What do you think?
I think it makes a huge difference in the room!
{You can find more before & after shots of my Living Room reveal here.}
Is it something you would try?

{Oh, and it’s the last day for both of these awesome giveaways! They end at midnight (EST) tonight. So hurry and enter if you haven’t already!}

    This is a great idea! I’ll have to do this as well. But first, I might need to buy a new rug. 🙂

    Have a nice day!

    How simple but nice it came out.
    Would probably work even better in
    houses without kids. Great idea.
