We’ve already told you about one of our favorite classes at SNAP, where we got to make one of the stinkin’ cute kits from Poppyseed Projects. Ours was the Spring is in the Air plaque, you may have seen it on my mantel recently:
Well, we couldn’t stop with just one! So, we got their cute Hello Sunshine kit and I decided to put together a quick tutorial on “How to Add Texture” to your board. {I had a little fun with my chalkboard for the background.}
Here is what the kit looked like when I opened it up. The wooden plaque and vinyl sheet come as a set, but you do have to purchase the texturizing cream separately. The jar of cream will last you several projects!
Their steps are really detailed and easy to follow. But I wanted to show you a few pictures of the process too. The most important thing I can stress in this tutorial is to make sure to let your board dry COMPLETELY after every step! Here’s what I did for the first step:
1. Clean the surface of your board to remove any dust that might be there.
2. Brush your texturzing cream on in a thick coat. {Don’t worry about getting it too thick, I did mine a little too thin the first time and had to go back and add more to get it to the texture I wanted.} You can apply it in any direction… I wanted my brush strokes to be kind of messy and going in all different directions! There are so many ways to apply this cream to get different looks… with a rag in circular motions, with a foam brush, etc.
3. Wipe down the sides with a rag to remove any excess cream.
4. Let it dry for at least 2 hours before you paint {the cream will dry clear, but you should be able to see/feel the texture on your board.}
5. Once my board was completely dry, I spray painted it gray for my first foundation color. You will be able to see a little bit of this color when you distress your board.
6. After that layer was dry, I spray painted it again in white. I had to do a couple of good coats to cover the gray completely.
7. I let the board dry overnight before applying my vinyl. To apply the vinyl stencil, just center the design on your board, smooth it down, and rub over the entire surface to adhere it well. Now, pull the backing paper up and your stencil will be applied to the board.
8. In this case, the vinyl and the paint are both white so it’s kind of hard to see. Now, we are ready to add some color!
It’s no secret that I love bright colors, and often times my color inspiration comes from our everyday surroundings or activities. This time, it happened to be my daughter’s playdough:
I loved the orange and pink combination, and thought it would look great accented with the turquoise color that is everywhere in my house 🙂 Luckily, I had all of these colors in my stash! I decided to go with orange for the chevron design and pink for the words.
9. I used some acrylic craft paint and a paint sample from Valspar’s new summer line, the color is Whipped Strawberry. If you want to make it really easy, you can just choose one color and paint it over the entire board.
10. I started with the orange, and painted it carefully around the edges of the stencil. {I ended up doing about 3 coats.}
11. Then, I added the strawberry color for the words, Hello Sunshine! {I only needed 2 coats of that paint.}
12. I let it dry for 2-3 hours before I removed the vinyl. This is what it looked like when I was done:
They have SO many cute plaques and amazing frames too. If you haven’t seen their holiday designs, you need to check these out:
This is so cool! I’m heading over to poppyseed projects right now.
