Halloween Door Decor

September 7, 2012 20 Comments Holly & Nat

With the temperatures dropping {not to mention the leaves}, it can only mean one thing… time to decorate my front door for Fall! I have seen a lot of Halloween wreaths out there, but I wanted to do something a little different this year. For my door decoration, I decided to create a bewitching display with one of my painted chalkboard platters.

I already have a few Halloween wreaths at my house, but I wanted to shake things up a little and create a spooky vignette for the front door. I went with a wicked witch theme {since I already had the broom from last year} and I have been dying to decorate a witch hat! I found a paper mache witch hat at Michaels and painted it black:
{I also sprayed it with a clear coat of Rustoleum to give it a durable finish}
I found some fabulous ribbon and embellishments at Michaels to decorate my witch hat:
To create my spooky chalkboard, I used another one of my dollar store platters, some hammered metal spray paint, black and silver craft paint, and the Americana Chalkboard Clear Coating from DecoArt.
To answer a few questions from my last chalkboard post, I got these platters at Family Dollar, and I used 3M Command picture hanging strips to hang them up. Also, someone asked if you could use a Chalk Paint Pen… yes, you can but it leaves a residue that is slightly visible after you erase. So I would just stick with regular ol’ chalk 🙂
I decided on my “Wicked” chalk quote, wrote it on, then started adding the other witchly components. I attached the broom to the bottom edge of the platter with hot glue. It seems to be holding up great!
I love how the witch hat came out:

I attached the hat to the top edge of the platter with hot glue {again!} This was a little trickier to line up just right, but it worked best when I laid the platter flat on the table to apply the glue. I was thrilled with how all three pieces looked together…

Now, to hang them on my door… I used 3M Command strips {of course!} I seriously have a value pack of these things in my house at all times.
I put 2 small strips on the back of the platter, and used one on the back of the hat brim to secure it to the door.

It is really secure, I am not worried about it falling down at all! And it is super easy to take down and re-attach, so I could easily bring it inside if we have a big storm. {By the way, what do you think of my newly-painted turquoise door?}

Do you guys decorate your front door for Halloween? Is it too early? I just couldn’t keep this cuteness inside 🙂
 Have a great weekend!

      Right now Target has some similar little witches brooms. The one I bought is about 24 inches long and it has a black wooden handle and the “brush” part is made of grape vine twigs that are covered in purple glitter. They also came in green or copper colored glitter. They were in the dollar section, but I think they cost $2.50. 🙂

    so cute! After reading your post about turning Dollar Store platters into chalkboards, I rushed right out and got a few. They were my next project, but I’m thinking I may have to try this first, before the holiday. Thank you for sharing another great project! You girls are TALENTED!

    I am almost finished with my platter, broom, and hat. It is so pretty. I am about to attach my broom and hat. Now that some time has passed since you made yours, are they still sticking to the platter? I am really concerned they will fall off or will have a hard time sticking it. I am wondering if I should use a different glue than hot glue? I cannot wait until it is done! I think I will get more supplies next year and make for friends. There was only one peacock feather left and no others to be found around me. I have a feeling alot of people saw your blog…thank you for the idea. I love it!!
