Glitter Balloon Tutorial

January 31, 2017 Leave a Comment Holly & Nat

Here is the highly requested tutorial for my glitter dipped balloons! Since my daughter’s Sleeping Beauty birthday party two years ago, they have become one of our most popular projects. I decided to make them again last year for her Cinderella party and now I’m finally sharing the pictures and simple (but messy) process with you guys.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started: (affiliate links included below)

  1. Balloons
  2. Assortment of glitter and/or small sequins
  3. Mod podge
  4. Foam paint brush
  5. Something to catch the glitter on your table (large tray or posterboard worked for me!)
  6. Mixing bowls from your kitchen
  7. Other embellishments (optional)

The jumbo gold glitter with the green label is one of my favorites, and it’s one of the cheapest to buy! You can find it at Walmart in the craft section, and it comes in silver too. I also really loved how the German glitter looked on the balloons, this one is Recollections brand from Michaels.

I tried a few techniques to get a mixed look with several different glitters, and the way that worked best for me was to pre-mix the glitter or sequins together on a paper plate. Then I would apply the mixture to the balloon all at once, before the glue dried. But I’m getting ahead of myself!

Once your glitter is ready, make sure you have a surface underneath that you can dump the glitter out of afterwards. Here, I used a large tray but the next time I made these, I used a plain white posterboard and it worked so much better!

Next, you will get out a mixing bowl that is big enough to fit your balloon in. It sounds weird, but it’s the easiest way to keep your balloon in place while it’s drying because the glitter makes it top heavy. You can place the balloon in the bowl, round side up, or hold it yourself while applying the mod podge. This will just take some trial and error to see which way is easiest for you. I don’t have a picture of this part because it is impossible to take pictures while doing it myself!

Apply the mod podge in an even coat, as quickly as possible, around the top 1/3 of the balloon (the round part.) This is the bottom of the balloon in all my pictures but while you are glittering, it is the top.

Then quickly and evenly shake the glitter mixture over ALL of the gluey surface. If you need to, you can shake out more glitter from the jar to fill in any gaps.

Now place the balloon upright in the bowl and let it dry!

That’s really all there is to it! In between balloons, if I switched glitters, I would clean out my tray (or with the posterboard, just fold and dump in the trash) and then mix my next batch of glitter. I really love how sequins look too! These are the very first glitter dipped balloons I made with sequins and silver and gold jumbo glitter:

When the balloons are dry, you can string them up on a chandelier for a focal point above the table, hang them from a ceiling in your entryway, or just accent in your party decor. When the light catches them, sparkles dance everywhere on the walls and ceiling. So fun!

For the Cinderella party, I decided to embellish them with some butterflies (just like her dress in the new movie!) I cut the butterflies out of cardstock with my Cricut, and attached them with Elmers glue. I love the extra dimension they add!

I hope you guys will try these out. They are so much fun, and your party guests will love them! Let me know if you have any questions about the process and I will gladly help you. (And this is a project you may want to do when your kids and husband are in bed because the glitter kind of gets everywhere! haha)
