Easy Hexagon Wall Treatment

June 11, 2013 53 Comments Holly & Nat

This is one of my favorite quick room updates, and it was SO easy! We are now offering these wooden hexagons and other shapes in our Etsy shop, Geometree Design. Before I get to the juicy details, I have to tell you that I finished this project in February to debut on Studio 5… here is a link to the show and my geometric wall treatments. I promise I didn’t copy my cute friend Mandi’s amazing hexagon wall! Here’s what I came up with:

I originally had this brainstorm when I was trying to figure out how to fill the space on a blank wall in my daughter’s room. About six months ago I had planned on making it a gallery wall, but now I wanted something different. Here is a before shot of her reading nook and empty wall:

As many of you know, we are renting our home and I am constantly trying to think of ways to make a big impact without making a permanent change. I really wanted to add a geometric pattern to the wall, but I didn’t just want it to be flat… I was going for a 3-D effect. I started sketching up some patterns and settled on hexagons as my favorite design!

I had the shapes cut out of 1/4″ MDF, some solid hexagons and some hollow ones:

I painted the solid hexagons in various shades of turquoise… I had a few acrylic paints to start, then I just added white until the colors were perfect. The hollow hexagons got a special treatment… gold leafing! This is one of my favorite new craft mediums. If you haven’t tried it yet, you must! This was my first experience with gold leaf, and it was suprisingly easy. I even let my kids help brush off the excess leafing and they loved it. {Sorry I don’t have any pictures of this process, but I was busting to get this done before leaving for Studio 5!} Here is the final result:

I attached all of the wooden shapes to the wall with {what else?} 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, one of my favorite DIY supplies of all time! For this set of 8 hexagons, I used 16 small strips (two strips to attach each hexagon, and they are very secure.) I have had them hanging up for several months now, and they haven’t budged! You can get this set of 16 strips for around $10, here is where I found mine: 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips 2 packs of 8 strips. (Affiliate link for Amazon included.)

I am thrilled with the result!

There is a perfect pop of color, texture, and just the right amount of trendy for my little girl’s room.
What do you guys think of the hexagon trend? If you want to try this out yourself, we have this set of 8 hexagons available NOW in our shop. Check it out!

We are getting close to finishing up her room! We are in the process of switching her to a big girl bed, so I am working on some new bedding, bed skirt, and pillows. Here are some of the other simple projects I have done to update her room:

I love it! I pinned it to remember when we move :). I love that it makes such an impact without damaging the wall at all. The gold leaf looks awesome, too.
