DIY Stenciled Crate for Spring

March 20, 2014 5 Comments Holly & Nat

Can you feel it in the air? Yup, today is the first day of Spring! I love this time of year because it means we can finally spend more time outside. Today I want to share how I spiced up a boring wooden crate using Stencil1 stencils and created a fun outdoor storage solution!
These are not just any old stencils, you guys. They are designed by Ed Roth, a super-talented designer, painter and DIY enthusiast – AND they’re washable and re-usable!

I used the amazing FolkArt Multi-Surface paint with my large (12×12) floral stencil. This size would be perfect on walls, but since we’re renting I decided to update a smaller item. The Multi-Surface paint can be used indoor, outdoor, on fabric, and is even dishwasher-safe! (Told ya it was amazing!)

To get started, I recommend testing out the pattern on a piece of paper. Use a flat stencil brush and go light on the paint at first until you get a feel for it. Then when you’re ready to go, make sure to tape your stencil down to hold it in place. Using the flat brush with short, pouncing motions will prevent the paint from bleeding underneath the stencil.

Did I mention the FolkArt paint and Stencil1 stencils were all available (or will be shortly) at JoAnn Fabric & Craft stores? I actually picked up the whitewash crate there also, for around $10!

Now for the fun part! My kids are so excited to have a spot to hold our spring/summer essentials: bubbles, chalk, flip-flops and sunscreen. I like having a cute container that looks very appropriate for Spring!

What would you add a fun stenciled pattern to?

Super cute Nat! I have a project using that same stencil tomorrow–it’s fun to see different ways to use it!
