DIY Patterned Burlap & Fall Harvest Wreath

September 13, 2013 3 Comments Holly & Nat

I’m getting so excited for Fall! It is my favorite time of year, hands down. Now that I am finally settling down in our new home (okay, so I’m not even close to being unpacked yet), I am working on a few fall projects for my front porch. I decided to recycle my summer wreath and use the burlap as the base for a neutral harvest wreath for my front door. I fell in love with these stems of shimmery burlap leaves, and added a few stalks of dried wheat to complete the look. I even created my own patterned burlap ribbon to hang my new Fall Harvest Wreath:

Here’s a closer look at the supplies I used:

  • Wreath base {wrapped in burlap} – recycled from my Summer Succulent Wreath
  • 2 stems of Ashland burlap leaves
  • 1 bundle of dried wheat stalks
  • twine
  • DIY patterned burlap {tutorial below}
When I was shopping for my wreath materials, I came across a section of patterned burlap at JoAnn’s that was to die for! They had spiders for Halloween, geometric patterns, and even a gold polka-dot one! I really wanted to grab some for my wreath but it was $14.99 a yard. I already had some plain burlap at home so I decided to make my own 🙂
For this project, I needed a strip of burlap about 5 inches wide to hang my wreath. But you could definitely do this on a larger piece of burlap too! First I cut my burlap and laid it out on the table. Then I grabbed the rest of my supplies:
I love the new stencils from DecoArt, and picked out this classic hounds tooth patterned stencil. I also used some of their acrylic paint in Light Buttermilk (one of my favorite colors!)
I just went section by section, down the length of the strip until the pattern was complete. So easy!

Think of all the gorgeous projects you could make this Fall with your own patterned burlap… I already have a few more in mind 🙂  Here are some of our Fall and Halloween wreaths from the past:
