DIY Jewelry Organizer with IKEA Utensil Holder

March 22, 2013 13 Comments Holly & Nat

Just in case you missed all the fun yesterday, or wanted more details on this DIY, I thought I’d share my jewelry organization solution today. Holly & I were asked to be a part of (UT) Studio 5‘s “IKEA +$10” Challenge. They give you an item to use plus a $10 budget. Here’s the item we got to repurpose:
{The IKEA ORDNING cutlery holder}

I knew right away I wanted to use those little holes for storing earrings. Probably because my current jewelry situation looked a little scary. Yup, that’s a crappy plastic bowl from the Dollar Tree that I had left over from the Pinkalicious party. Tangled mess of messiness.

I started with some 3M Command Hooks – the teeny tiny clear “mini” hooks. They were perfect! Now I have a spot for necklaces to hang and holes to hook earrings through.
Next, I needed a base to lift the container up a little bit. After looking a few places and having a craft-fail moment with an upside-down planter that resembled a toilet plunger, I found this BHG candle holder at Wal-Mart.

Oh, did I mention I went at 12:30 am? Wal-Mart is a little freaky at that hour. Anywho, I spray painted that bad boy white and I could finally glimpse a small amount of hope that this thing might work out! After letting it dry overnight, I used E6000 glue to attach the base to the IKEA caddy.
Woo-hoo! Starting to come together! It’s ready for my bling!
 I love that I can hang jewelry all around the organizer.
There’s plenty of room and even more inside for bracelets and rings!

Ah. So much better than that pink plastic eyesore. You could stick this on the bathroom counter or closet shelf, too. Umm..did I leave that sick layer of dust in the photo that was on live TV? You betcha. Actually I just noticed it right now and am just a tad embarassed. Live without pretending, right?
Tomorrow I’ll share a little behind-the-scenes look at my HUSBAND’s take on the IKEA + $10 Challenge! (But you can go ahead and watch our segments here, if you just can’t wait.) AND Holly did a seriously cool project with her IKEA caddy, too! Lots to come. Happy Weekend!

    Very smart! I was staring at the holder a few weeks back wondering I could make pendant lights out of them. It’s perfect for a jewelry organizer. 🙂 Megan

    Very, very, cool idea. Seen this done before but with a box grater – I think I prefer the round one much better. Shopping at 12:30am!!! There isn’t a shop open after 6:30pm here where I live:( Looking forward to seeing the other projects 🙂
