DIY Embellished Easter Baskets

March 13, 2013 7 Comments Holly & Nat

I can’t believe it is already going to be Easter in a few weeks! Do you (oops, I mean the Easter Bunny) do Easter baskets for your kids? My kids have never had cute ones…because I just didn’t want to spend the money! Today I’m sharing ideas on how to decorate those plain, inexpensive Easter baskets and turn them into something much more festive and beautiful!

These standard, somewhat boring baskets came from Walmart for $ 0.98 and $1.98. I loved that they came in all different colors, but I hated how boring they were. For the price I knew I could grab a few baskets and do something with them.

Here’s the challenge: USE WHAT YOU HAVE! Come on, craft supply hoarders of the world! Time to bust out the stash and put it to good use.

Keep reading for a full tutorial!

Here’s what I rounded up out of my hoard to embellish my baskets:
  • ruffled ribbon (found at a local scrapbooking store)
  • fake daisy flower
  • alligator hair clip (Sally Beauty Supply)
  • scrap fabric – my piece measured 38×12 inches
  • Apple Barrell by Plaid acrylic paint in Key West
  • small scalloped frame from PoppySeed Projects (SNAP 2012 swag!)
  • and LOTS of my favorite crafting tool, hot glue.
For the big basket, I wanted to try a fabric lining. The lined baskets in the stores are expensive! I figured for 2 bucks I could use fabric I already had and hot glue the heck out of it. So I did! Seriously, the inside doesn’t look amazing, but it doesn’t matter – it will be full of grass and candy and hopefully some Reese’s eggs I can borrow from my kids when they’re not looking.
Here are the basic instructions. Take your fabric and “hot-glue-hem” the edges. Lay it inside your basket to see how wide and long you need it. You will use 2 pieces, one in each direction.
Cut a slit to get fabric around the handle. It will be covered by the frame, so don’t worry about what it looks like! Hot glue everything down. Repeat with second piece (going the other length of the basket) and hot glue. This time you don’t have to worry about the handle! Make sure you have enough fabric to get the outside corners covered. The inside doesn’t need to look perfect!
I painted the frame this fun springy color to match the fabric. Stick in a picture of who the basket is for or write the child’s name. I used (you guessed it!) hot glue to attach the frame right to the basket.

For the smaller basket, I figured the fabric lining would be a pain. So I went with simple and sweet. The pre-ruffled ribbon was hot glued in two layers around the edge and I added the cute daisy to one side.

Here’s the twist: (It’s like in every reality TV show, right?) Instead of gluing the flower right to the basket, I attached it to a little alligator clip. Now it clips to the basket and is a new flower for my daughter’s Easter hairdo!

I absolutely love how easy it was to transform this $0.98 basket. It adds a little something without being difficult or expensive.

I hope this inspires you to try dressing up something plain! It was fun to just use what I had – I only spent 3 dollars on both baskets. Now here’s the question…what do you put in them? Leave a comment with your ideas!

Nat this is so sweet! I just ordered a [overpriced] personalized easter basket for my daughter. I didn’t even think about trying to embellish my own. Shame on me I could have saved a bundle! I pinned!

“The Easter Bunny” usually brings the standard chocolate/peanut butter anything (I like to “borrow” from the kids too), new markers or sidewalk chalk, chapstick, sometimes fun socks and she ALWAYS brings new toothbrushes and toothpaste (they get another new one for Halloween and Santa might bring too so they for sure are replaced often enough. Ok I guess the Easter Bunny around here is a little practical but the kids have never complained.

Adorable! I had the thought to try and embellish some baskets for my boys- I generally use buckets for them instead- but decided I wasn’t sure how I could do it without it looking girly! I’m really gonna think on my stash and see if I can’t pull it off- these are so classic and cute!

So cute Nat! Easter Bunny likes to bring a new pair of flip flops, some candy, maybe a fun toy surprise and $ eggs are the latest from our Easter bunny. The big boys love that. Not lots of money either, like pocket change.
