My kids love making their Christmas “wish lists” for Santa, and believe it or not, they’ve already started working on their lists for this year! I’ve been trying to come up with a unique way to personalize their stockings, other than the traditional embroidered names or initials at the top. When I found these darling mini clipboards, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I used my stash of Martha Stewart Crafts products to create these custom Christmas Stocking Wish Lists!
A few weeks ago I received a box of the Martha Stewart decoupage products and accessories to play with, and they were perfect for this project! Here’s what I used to create my clipboard wish lists:
I found the mini wooden clipboards at a local craft store for $1.00 each. Aren’t they cute?? Here’s what I used from my Martha Stewart stash:
– Multi-Surface Satin Paint {red: Habanero, green: Scottish Highlands}
– Multi-Surface Decoupage Matte Finish
– Multi-Surface Chalkboard Acrylic Craft Paint
– Martha Stewart Decoupage Lace trim
– Martha Stewart Decoupage paper cut outs
– Basic brush set
{All of these products are available at your local Michaels or in Plaid’s online store.}
I also used some Christmas scrapbook paper and ribbon from my own craft stash 🙂
I started by painting the outer edge of the clipboard with the multi-surface satin paint. When it was dry, I painted the center of the clipboard with Chalkboard paint. This paint needs at least 2 coats to get good coverage, with drying time in between. {I used a fan to speed up all the drying time in between steps!} While the paint was drying, I cut a frame out of the scrapbook paper to fit on top of the clipboard. I used a paper template to create a cute space for the chalkboard to “peek” through. When the paint was dry, I was ready to attach my paper frame to the clipboard with the Martha Stewart decoupage medium.
It was so easy to use! I applied a coat underneath the paper and adhered it to the clipboard, then when that was dry I added a few light coats to the top. I love the way the Matte finish came out! I was careful not to get too much decoupage on the chalkboard paint area, just enough to seal the paper.
When the board was completely dry, I moved on to embellish the clip! I used these darling paper cut outs that say, “Noel” and “Merry Christmas” and attached them using the same decoupage technique. Once I had the boys’ boards done, I decided to do something a little different for my daughter. I painted the entire clipboard with chalkboard paint, then added lace trim to the sides and a festive ribbon around the edge. The decoupage worked great for these trims too, but I used a much thicker coat!
It is pretty cool that you can use their decoupage medium for fabric too. And, if you were to use it on any kind of glass or dishware, it is totally dishwasher safe! Crazy, huh?
The chalk paint is a fun way to customize them with my kids handwriting… but their actual Santa lists are quite a bit longer and may not fit 🙂 That is why I love that it is a clipboard too! I can just clip their final lists on top when they are finished making them. {Until it is time to mail them to the North Pole of course!}

These are so cute! Are the clipboards mini or are they full-sized, couldn’t tell from the pictures. Even if they don’t use them, these are still a really cute Christmas decor idea.
