$5 Friday: Colorful Chalkboards {from Dollar Store platters}

August 31, 2012 38 Comments Holly & Nat

I am really excited for today’s $5 Friday project. SO easy, SO functional, SO cute. Oh, and did I mention, SO cheap?? My friend picked up some assorted silver platters from the dollar store, and I knew I wanted to make chalkboards with them. I’ve seen black ones done, but never seen them in bright colors. I need color my friends! I am truly in love with how they turned out…

I started out with these:
{spray paint colors: Rustoleum Lemon Grass, Rustoleum Lagoon, and Krylon Classic Gray}
Now comes the really cool part:

 I got this little bottle of goodness in my SNAP swag bag, and I have been dying to try it! You should be able find this Americana Chalkboard Clear Coating at any craft store that carries DecoArt paints. It is only $2! Use a foam brush to apply two coats of chalkboard coating. One coat, horizontally, {let dry} then the next coat, vertically. Let it cure for 24 hours. Then you are ready to condition your new  chalkboards:

Just rub the surface lightly with a piece of chalk until it is completely covered. Wipe clean with a cloth or baby wipe, and you are ready to write!

I customized them for my daughter, since they will be going in her bedroom. My little girl’s nickname is Anna Banana…

I also played around with a few magnetic wooden letters {since the platters are metal, they serve double-duty as a magnetic board and chalkboard!}

And I thought it would be fun to incorporate her birthday into the mix:

This entire grouping of three chalkboard platters cost me a total of $3 and change to complete. {Add $2 more for the chalkboard coating, and spraypaint already in my stash.} There you have it! Another component of baby girl’s Gallery Wall is complete! If you missed the other gallery wall projects so far, take a look at my glass cabinet door and painted photo plaque. Here’s one more look at the before and after of the dollar store chalkboards:

I am already thinking of a million things I want to paint the with the Chalkboard Coating… seriously, the wheels are spinning! And I am no stranger to chalk projects 🙂 Watch for more coming your way soon! Enjoy the holiday weekend!

{I was not compensated by DecoArt in any way for this post… I just really love their Chalkboard paint!}

    Ah-maz-ing! I’ve never seen this product, but you know I’ll be getting some ASAP! I’ve also used those Dollar Tree trays for chalkboards, but mine are just boring ol’ black chalk paint! I’m SO breaking out my lagoon spray and giving this a go. 🙂

    I’ve pinned and FB shared!

    Do you know if the chalkboard bistro markers work with the chalkboard coating? The don’t work very well on the normal chalkboard paint, but I would love if they worked with this! Thanks!
