10 Gifts Teachers LOVE to Get!

May 2, 2016 21 Comments Holly & Nat

Okay, that title should probably read, “10 Gifts I Loved Getting” when I taught school. It’s all subjective 😉 Yesterday I asked on our Facebook page if anyone still needed teacher gift ideas and most replied with a resounding, “YES!” So today I’m sharing quick ideas of things I really enjoyed getting as gifts for Teacher Appreciation week, end of the year, etc.

1. Gift Cards
I know this is a given, but what I loved is that our PTA put together a little worksheet for me to fill out at the beginning of the year of all my “favorite things” – so I got gift cards to my favorite restaurants, the movies, etc. I think iTunes, Amazon or Target would also be great! You can download this App(le) for my Teacher printable here.
2. School Supplies
This might seem silly, but if you know the teacher will be there next year, why not get a head start on supplies he/she might need? Here is a great place to start:
3. Board Game/Class Game
Teachers will appreciate getting something new that the students can enjoy, too! Especially to hold them over those last few weeks after testing is done and the kids are so excited for Summer!

4. Something for Summer
Let’s face it. By the end of the year, the teachers are REALLY looking forward to Summer, too! Anything that reminds them it’s coming soon would be fun – a swim towel, sunscreen, flip-flops, or a new Beach Tote!

5. Student Autographs

My first year of teaching, my awesome room moms did the cutest thing. They gave me a folding camp chair that all the students had autographed (in secret) with a Sharpie. It was so fun to use the chair all summer and read those names! Other ideas might be a tote bag, picture frame, or Sharpie Mug!

6. Delicious Smells
I’ve heard teachers say they have wayyy too many candles, but I loved getting lotion, hand soap, or hand sanitizer from Bath & Body Works!
You can download these Summer Sweet tags here!
7. Treats
I’m all for homemade deliciousness, but store-bought (like candy or pop) will last longer and won’t be as hard to take home. Caffeine + chocolate are always a winning combo in my book! But just ask! Maybe your child’s teacher would love some fresh fruit or homemade jam. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

{Get an end-of year version of the tag HERE}

8. Something Non-School Related
I know this contradicts #2, but some of my favorite gifts were ones that had more to do with what I liked to do besides teach. One mom knew I liked to scrapbook and got me some supplies for making an album. I love that! Find out the teacher’s hobbies & interests. They’ll appreciate it!

9. A Hand-Written Card or Drawing
Guess what? You don’t have to get your child’s teacher an elaborate gift! It’s not a requirement! I actually really loved when the students themselves wrote me a little note about the school year. If it includes a drawing, even better!

{My daughter’s drawing of Aunt Holly!}

10. A Photo
Okay, read carefully. This does not need to be in a frame. If you captured a great group shot and want to frame it for the teacher to hang, that’s fine. But throughout the year, I’m guessing your child’s teacher doesn’t have time to get a lot of pictures with themselves & students together. Whether it’s a couple 4×6 prints in a card or a DVD of photos, I know it would be meaningful!

    After searching through several pins recently, I decided I would try my hand at a little homemade something that also happened to be nearly free! I love the various subway art, but especially those with colors (rather than the standard black and white). So, off I go to Google the various ways I could recreate this art for my son’s teacher. I’m not software savvy, so of course mine is a little ‘elementary’, no pun intended, sort of 🙂 I managed to come up with several words and font’s and even included her name in the center. I printed it for free from work (shhhhh don’t tell) and bought a $3 frame. It’s now ready to go. I just wish I could post a pic of it here so I could get feedback before I hand it off next week. 🙁 Hope she likes it!

    As a high school teacher, I love getting Starbucks or Target gift cards. I also love getting cute stationary cards or journals to use in the classroom or outside! I love the summer gift idea. Summer here I come!

    I also appreciate a donation to a favourite charity on my behalf…some that I have received: animals such as a chicken or pigs sent to a village, packages to send a child to school in a third world country(includes uniform, desk, books, etc.), bio sands water filter, bibles, etc. I don’t really ever feel that I NEED anything but when parents want to acknowledge what you’ve done for their child, this is one way that they can do it. And if they ask, this is what I ask for.

    It helps when you have a child that also listens or pays attention to the teacher. My son told me last year that his teacher needed a clock for a Christmas present, he said her clock on the wall was always messed up and bugged her. I thought, odd but we bought her a white wall clock from Walmart and I had a friend of mine do some vinyl words such as create, teach, etc and added her initial to the plastic face in the middle of the clock – she said she loved it and my son said she replaced her old non-working clock.
