Before I get into the tutorial, I have an awesome secret to share with you guys! Maybe you already know about it, but just humor me :) You know how everyone makes their own versions of the "cone" trees? Glitter, paper, ribbon, ruffles, felt, etc... well, until now I have always bought the Styrofoam or paper mache cones. Those can get pretty expensive when you need several trees, especially for the larger sizes. Here's a new option for only $1.99!
A plastic DOLL cone! I found them at JoAnn's in the doll crafting aisle... they come in a 12" height for $1.99 each! What a steal, I grabbed three of them :) I also picked up two sheets of white craft foam {the kind with an adhesive back} and this yummy plaid flannel:
I cut a piece of flannel to fit the sheet of craft foam, then removed the backing paper on the foam, stuck it onto the fabric and smoothed it out.
I cut it in half lengthwise, and then free-handed a scallop pattern on the edge and cut them out. {I made each scalloped strip a little different in size so the pattern would get smaller it goes up the tree.} Then I started at the base and glued each strip around the tree with my hot glue gun. I overlapped the pieces in the back at the same spot so the front would look nice :)
Here's the final result:
