Color Block Canvas {Easy Kids' Art}

I shared this project over at Positively Splendid last month, and thought you guys would like to see it. I'm making a list of all my spray paint projects to finish this month {before it gets too cold}... here is an easy one to add to the list!

I love creating simple art pieces that add a personal touch to the spaces in our home. I have two boys, 5 and 7, who always want to be "helpers" in my DIY adventures, especially anything involving paint :) I usually keep my spray paint off limits, but for this project, I let them try it out {closely supervised!} It was a WIN for both of us... the kids got to experiment with painters tape and spray paint, and I got to indulge my recent obsession with Color Blocking!

Here's how we did it: {so simple-- the kids did it all!}

I had all of the supplies for this project at home, and I bet you do too! You'll need:

1. Flat canvas {we used 8x10} - these are super cheap at any craft store or WalMart

2. Spray Paint

3. Large Envelope or scrap paper

4. Painters Tape {we tried 2 different kinds: Frog Tape and Scotch Masking Tape}

{I'm not doing any kind of product review, but in our experience, the Frog Tape worked much better to give a clean line. The orange and blue canvas was done with Scotch Tape, the turquoise and silver one was done with Frog Tape.}

I gave each of my boys a roll of tape and let them go to town! I love that they both came up with a unique pattern for their canvases. Oh, and I guess they are too cool for me to get pictures of them now...

I promise he was having more fun than this!

Once the canvases were all taped off, we took them outside to paint.

We used a manila envelope to mask off half of the canvas. I let the boys choose their own colors from my stash, and taught them some safety precautions about spray paint. With my help, they each painted their canvases. We let one side dry, then switched the envelope to the other side before painting the second color. 

When the canvases were dry, they had a blast taking off the tape to "reveal" their creations!

They promptly ran to their room and put them up on display...

I love it when I can find an art project that, 1) my kids can do by themselves, 2) allows them to express their creativity, and 3) actually looks great with their room decor! As soon as we were done, they wanted to make more. And for a few minutes, they actually thought being a crafty mom was cool. Here are a few other easy projects I've done in the boys' bedroom.
