Colorful Mantel {and painted mason jars}

If you are a long-time reader of My Sister's Suitcase, {haha, like 6 months} then you will know that I enjoy changing out my decor for seasons and holidays. One of the spaces that I love to change up often is my mantel.  I did a Spring mantel a few months back, but after Easter I was getting pretty tired of it. I found the perfect inspiration for my new mantel at SNAP! In one of our classes, we got to make this awesome board from Poppyseed Projects:

We were able to learn about their texture medium and paint our own board in some of the new spring colors from Deco Art. These paint colors are SO me right now! I have been drawn to this coral and aqua combo, and it's been showing up in everything I do :) Even in my closet..

{disclaimer, I didn't pay this much... I got mine at TJ Maxx. I also don't look like this when I wear them!}

I have been trying to bring brighter colors into my wardrobe because I LOVE COLOR so much! So, I thought it would be fun to create a mantel with some of my favorite colors and not take it too seriously....

My colorful mantel! I know it's almost summer, but here in Idaho we are just starting to warm up so it feels like the beginning of spring to me :)

I used this adorable "Spring is in the Air" board from Poppyseed Projects as my jumping off point, and gathered the rest of the items from around my house. The only thing I purchased were a few fabrics for the ruffle canvas I made. I'll be sharing more on that project another time :)

My favorite project for this mantel are the silver {spray-painted} Mason jars... (inspired by this)

These were SO simple to make {like, seriously 5 minutes} and they turned out even better than I expected! I used jars that I had on hand, a regular canning jar from Walmart and {my favorites} these Classico spaghetti sauce jars. I got them in a 2-pack at Sam's Club, so they are a little larger than the normal size. I love how they have "Atlas Mason" in a vintage text on the side.

I used some cheap silver spray paint, and it only took 2 light coats to cover completely. They were dry within minutes! I can't tell you how much I'm loving these in my house :)

Here are a few more shots of my mantel... hope you like it!

Now, as I promised on Monday, here are a few more things you don't yet know about me:

1. My favorite season is Fall... the cool weather, pumpkin patches, hot chocolate, Thanksgiving, and my birthday :)
2. I wanted to be an Interior Designer all through elementary school and most of high school. In college, I switched majors too many times from Pre-Law, to Family Counseling, to Music Education, and finally settled on Marketing Communications. I think I graduated with 60 extra credits! Now I wish I would have followed my 10-year-old heart and kept at the design thing. Maybe someday I'll go back.
3. Hahaha, I had this one planned before I typed up #2 and now it just seems silly.... I am somewhat indecisive :) My brother bought this shirt for me a few years ago and it pretty much sums it up:

4. I eat ice cream {straight out of the carton} with a fork.
5. I love to dance in the living room. Family tradition from way back :)
6. I met my husband over {real} fireworks on the 4th of July.
7. I got hit on by a 13-year-old boy the other night. For real! {I wanted to say, "Hey buddy, I could be your mom!"} I was at the pool with my young womens group and maybe he was confused by my lack of a chest... I don't know :)
8. I love to sing... Nat and I used to be in a choir together and we even went to NYC in 2006 and sang at Carnegie Hall!

{what were we wearing?}

9. I adore thrift shopping {see some of my favorite scores here}
10. I'm not a morning person :)

You'll be seeing a lot more seasonal decor from me on the blog.... here are a few of my favorite mantels from the past:

I'll be back Friday with the final installment of "Holly Week" and another project for you!

  2. You girls...too fun. I loved that sign when I saw it at SNAP too. Your house is so bright and colorful I just wish that color pallette would look nice in my house, but it wouldn't. Someday when we moved I'm going to "bright and happy" colors instead of the boringness I have now. Miss you girls! :)

  3. Ack! What WERE we wearing? I think those "B-enhancers" as my husband likes to call them were cool and in style then... Hmm. Good times, though! {Nat}

  5. I LOVE your mantel!! And this post is hilarious... we dance in the family room too, and the only way my 7 year old eats ice cream is with a fork. He thinks the rest of our family is crazy for using a spoon :)

  17. First of all I LOVE your new bright mantel!!! So pretty and fun for Spring AND summer! (oh and here i'm still in spring-mode too because it's not warm enough to feel like summer yet!) Secondly I am laughing over the 13 year old hitting on you!! That is so funny!!! That's happened to me too- in our last ward when I was serving in the stake young women's and I'd chaperone the dances, sometimes young men from other wards would come up and ask me to dance! It's a good thing though- we're aging slowly! :)
    I LOVE your silver mason jars!! I've gotta try that!
    Hope things are well! Have a great weekend Holly!
