Master Bedroom: The "Before" {and a glimpse of what's coming}

OK peeps. I've been at this blogging thing for about 5 months now and never have you seen a picture of my house. {Other than the mantel in my living room.} By the way, a few of you have asked about the turquoise color I painted on my mantel wall... it is Safe Harbor by Olympic {I got it at Lowe's.}

I have actually done quite a few home decor/DIY projects around here since we moved in 8 months ago, but I haven't felt like any room is "complete" enough to show you! I went through all my "before" pics yesterday and it made me start to think that maybe you would like to see some of the transformations... even the small ones.

So, with that in mind, over the next month I am going to reveal some of my house to you guys. We are renting our home so I haven't done anything monumental, but it's pretty amazing what some paint and 3M command strips can do :)

Moving on. The one room in my home {in every place we've lived} that has been completely neglected when it comes to design, color, or even furniture for that matter, is our Master Bedroom. We've been married 12 years and have never purchased a single item of furniture for our bedroom, other than our King Size mattress, box spring and the awesome metal frame it came with. Our dresser is a hand-me-down from my mom, and the nighstand is a leftover from my son's room that I think we got at Target for $15. Since we've never really had anything nice in our room, it has kind of become the "catch all" for every other room in our house. Can any of you relate? I promise, I really do have a design sense! It just stops at the door to my bedroom :) So, I hope you won't be completely disgusted when I show you this before picture. (Also, we had just moved in a few days before this picture was taken, hence the boxes and baskets of crap everywhere!)

Are any of you guys cringing right now? It's OK, cuz I am :) Well, at least this is probably the worst it has ever looked. I promise it does look a little better now that we are all moved in. But for the most part, this is it. Makeup beige walls, nasty dresser, old duvet cover, no bedskirt (do you like how you can see our boxspring sticking out?) zero curtains, and no lighting. Lovely, isn't it?

Well, I am happy to report that it is ALL about to change!! Here is my makeover "to-do" list:

1. Paint the walls white. I have always wanted a fresh, white bedroom and I'm finally doing it!

2. New bedding, including a bed skirt. Check! Got an amazing deal on this Pottery Barn duvet cover and linen bed skirt at DownEast Home. Love that store.

3. Headboard... a tufted velvet one :) Already got this one in the works. Click here to see what's goin' on.

4. Paint the dresser and two side tables found on Craigslist with my new Annie Sloan chalk paint! After all the hype, I can't wait to try this stuff out. I got two colors.... Pure White and French Linen.

5. Make some new throw pillows for the bed. Already have the fabric... can't wait to show you guys :)
6. Buy a new rug. Check! Found this cool faux-wood grain rug over the weekend:

And see that bench? It was stolen from my dining room and is getting a makeover :) Here is my inspiration, from the December issue of Traditional Home magazine:

7. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Two more things I scored at DownEast Home last week:

Large Smythson Metal Lantern, retailed at Pottery Barn for $149. I got it for $18!

Grand Hotel Clock, also from PB, retails for $129. Got it for $55!
It is gorgeously rustic and just yummy in person :)

8. Lighting - still on the look out for lamps for the bedside tables, but I'm thinking about trying my hand at creating my own light fixture for over the bed. I have the perfect thing in mind and it only cost me $1! Curious?? hee hee hee.

9. Disguise the small off-center window behind the bed... I have a plan for this too. You'll have to wait and see!

10. Creative storage. Our bedroom is really small, the smallest room in our house in fact. So it was a pretty big adjustment moving from our previous home to this one. But I know I can figure out a way to hide some of our stuff and make more space in the room... Any ideas that have worked for you?

OK, I think that is about all for now. I'm sure more will be added to this list over the next couple of weeks. I would love to hear what you guys think of my plans so far :) Stay tuned for all the projects I'll be tackling along the way to the big reveal!

Just out of curiousity, do all of you have your dream Master Bedroom, or is it suffering from lack of design like mine??

  4. Oh I can so relate!!! My master bedroom is an absolute nightmare. there is seriously nothing dreamy about this room at all. We had to sell all our bedroom furniture when we moved in here because the room is so dang small and it had to serve as both our bedroom and our office., so now every day I pull my clothing from plastic boxes. (sorry, I know I've complained about all this to you before- your post is just stirring up my bedroom frustrations LOL) So anyhoo, YES all style stops at this door. I so love where you're going with your design ideas!!! I can't wait to see what you do! And holy cow girl, how have you been scoring all those amazing deals?! How awesome!
